Here are pictures and how-to's for freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

FRESHWATER - I have been keeping freshwater fish for over 20 years.  I've had various African Cichlids, Oscars, Fire Devils, and Jack Dempsies.  I have also swung to the opposite end of the spectrum and kept schooling fish like tetras, angels, monos and goldfish.  I currently have three freshwater tanks running:

My 50 gallon freshwater tank has an under-gravel filter and 1 bio-wheel penguin filter.  I have a 100 watt Jaeger glass heater for the winter.  No lighting except for a full spectrum incandescent bulb for the turtles that I turn on about 30min a day, 2-3 days a week. I have one old feeder goldfish that we got from a ping-pong ball game at a carnival in '98. The last full-time resident is a 6 year old pleco that is the hardiest sucker fish I have ever had.  It is about 8 inches long now.  There are also various transient fish in this tank as people give me fish they no longer want. Currently on this list is a koi-like goldfish leftover from the last vacation feeding..

My office tank is a 12 gallon eclipse tank that I filled with jasper rock from Home Depot.  I put a couple pieces of lace rock and a live fern.  Fish include 5 neon tetras and 2 Serpae Tetras

We also have a 20 gallon octagonal that currently supports an 3 scissor tails,  2 bleeding heart tetras, a black tetra and an algae eater. The other residents of this tank have taken the porcelain slide.

SALTWATER - I ventured into the keeping of saltwater once before with the above 20 gallon tank and an Aqua Clear 250 filter.  It was actually doing OK until my old roommate put a heater into the tank.  Unbeknownst to him, the thermostat on that heater was broken and we encountered a thermal runaway.

Unfortunately, the resulting soup was not edible, nor did it smell too good.  Too bad, because I really liked the Spanish Dancer that I had in there.  Flash forward about 8 years.  I have now purchased Eric's old 100 gallon blue-back Plexiglas salt from him.  It has a wet/dry filter, protein skimmer and built-in pre-filter.  Leonard, his dad, built an awesome stand for this tank, complete with mounted lighting, remote ballasts and PC fan that exhausts heat/moisture from the canopy.  I have been doing a bit of research to make this tank the epitome of all my years of fish-keeping, but at the same time it within a respectable (cheap) budget. If you like, follow along as I build out this tank
