How to get your Hunting License in Los Angeles
First of all, there is no minimum age in California for you
to get your Hunting License. However, all other laws like firearm
ownership, firearm possession, special tags required for certain game
animals (.i.e. deer at 12 years old and up) apply. When your child
gets there hunting license is dependent on your assessment of their maturity
level. The test is 100 questions (multiple choice) and requires about
8-10 hours of classroom instruction. Most classes DO NOT contain live fire -
it is all lab, or book work.
As a reference point, those of
you who live in Southern California (Los Angeles and Orange Counties), you
are Region 5. Mike Wolter is the coordinator for this area (as well as
Region 6-Deserts & San Diego). His number is: (909) 606-2424.
There is also a recorded information line for the region: (562) 590-5670.
Getting your license:
This list will walk you through "getting" your license.
It is not intended to teach you shooting, hunting or stalking skills...we'll
get to that later.

Request or pick-up a Hunter Safety Class handbook from a
local sporting good's store or DFG field office. Make sure that it has the
bubble test sheet or "scantron" in the book. You need this when you
attend your class and they usually do not have extras lying around.

Attend a Hunter Safety Education Class
I highly recommend Jim Overman and crew at the
Angeles Ranges.
Here's a great group of guys that make a long boring day fun. They run
their classes every third Saturday of the month. The cost is $10
(16years+) and $5 for those under 16. Bring a pillow to sit on and a
bagged lunch. The class runs from 9am to 5pm with a break for lunch.
You MUST have completed the handbook "homework" ahead of time.

Pass the Hunter Safety Class and receive your certificate of
completion
If you are a youth or a female, you will receive a coupon for a free youth
or family pheasant hunt. make sure you get that sent in before the
drawing deadline!
|
 |
Take your Certificate of Completion to a sporting good store
(Big 5 or Turner's Outodoorsmen) or a local Walmart.
|
 |
Purchase the stamp for your certificate. Make sure you
store this card and stamp in a safe place. Should you ever lose your
license and receipt
|
 |
Then purchase a Hunting License. See the
DFG page for costs. Junior prices are considerably less than adult
licenses. They also do not need an Upland Game Bird stamp for doves
and quail.
|
 |
Go to the
JHP
website and locate the forum for which you are interested in hunting.
I recommend trying doves (see
Upland Game Birds) for you beginners.

Get out there and always be safe!
